Missing a few female genes?

My friends back in England have been busy breeding lately. Here’s the latest arrival, Amy Jane, brand spanking new daughter of the aforementioned cosmo drinking Nick and his gorgeous Polish wife, Magdalena.

Congrats!!!! She’s just a day old in this photo. Look, her wee hands are still a bit wrinkled. I do like the self satisfied smile she has on her face though. This baby knows she has it good.

I seem to be surrounded by people getting engaged, married and having babies at the moment. It’s causing me to realise that I must be missing a couple of the female genes, as evidenced below:

1. Diamonds do nothing for me. I’ve had to fake some gushing over various engagement rings big time recently. I’m convincing too, seriously, if the Academy could see me I’d be a shoo-in for next year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar. I’m sorry, but I just don’t get the diamond thing, although I do like me a sapphire or an emerald. I get the jewellery part, just not the diamond fanaticism that seems to have swept every other member of New York’s female population.

2. Ditto the above on weddings. Ugh, the very thought of having a big wedding – and by big I mean more than say 30people – makes me feel sick to my stomach. I’m not even dating right now and the very notion makes me want to vomit, can you imagine how much worse I would feel if this were a possibility? Shudder!! I’ve never been big on the idea of a wedding. I think this has a lot to do with my spotlight shunning nature. I’d only have a big wedding if it was important to my groom. As I’ve aged I also think there are other things I’d rather spend the money on, such as a great vacation or the down payment for an apartment. I’m very practical that way.

3. Babies make me feel a bit awkward. I’m very capable with babies, I’ve babysat enough of them, and sure, they’re nice and all, but I don’t melt when I meet one. Maybe I would feel differently if I had my own, although I don’t have a strong urge to reproduce to be honest. People are always surprised when they hear this as I'm apparently a nurturing kind of person. However this is not to say I wouldn’t have one should the right man come along, but equally if I met someone that didn’t want children I don’t think my life would feel incomplete.

Who knows though, this is a snapshot of how I feel today, my thoughts on all the above could change if I met the right man tomorrow. Woman’s prerogative :-) That's also the fun thing about life, you never know where it will take you.

However there is definitely one area where I am most certainly not missing a female gene. Shoes. I love shoes...now we’re talking my language. I’m wearing these today, they're girly, but I love them ;-)

I'm with you on the diamond thing. I honestly can't tell a real one from a K-Mart one. I love jewelry, but I just don't go ga ga for diamonds. I'm also with you on the big wedding thing. Seems like way more stress than it's worth. Thank god you redeemed yourself with the shoes!

Hi Bangs, I know, even I was beginning to wonder if I were really a man. Phew, it was a close one.

I think the best way to get married would be to go to Vegas, and have a Jimi Hendrix impersonator officiate. Either that, or some cute little rural church in either Scotland or Italy.

Ha Ha, excellent wedding suggestions. Having seen first hand the stress the families are causing my friend Ash and her Italian fiance it just doesn't seem worth it.

I'm with you on just about everything, though I'm pretty indecisive in terms of shoes. I feel like I need a couple weeks to make a decision.

the wedding thing I could imagine a weekend at a beach house with neighboring beach houses filled with the guests.

I have to wonder where the Bridezillas come from. Another planet than you or I!

wah, i can never wear those shoes! They're so pretty but it must surely hurt to wear these.

Like you, I don't see the charm in big diamond rings maybe cos no one has bought them for me yet :-)

Big weddings are nothing but stress but when it comes to babies, I love them. Before I had any kids, I couldn't appreciate babies. Now I go gaga over them.

fish, do you know how much the average wedding (according to the times) costs back in blighty?

£18,000!!!!!!!!!!

i find it difficult to express myself on this matter given the economics.

all i will say is that you're going to make someone a very happy man. and just think what you could buy for £18,000. something that you could both have fun with for a long long time.

we live in a crazy crazy world

Hi Kitty, your wedding idea sounds idyllic. I dither over shoes a bit too, but not for long :-) I like Zappos, because you can order a ton of pairs, try them on at home with various outfits and then send them back and the shipping is free!! I love Zappos!!

Hi Blur Ting, the shoes just need a little practice, but those ones are actually quite comfortable for me now. No-one has ever bought me a diamond either, but I just don't feel they're me. As for babies, I am 100% sure I would feel differently about my own. I was fine with my nephew and to some extent my friends' babies, but I'm just not one of those women that goes ga-ga.

Hi Flowers, that's crazy money isn't it? I can't quite remember what the quote was about the average US wedding, but the figure was alarmingly high. I believe in commemorating the day, just not at that price :-)

Hmm. I like those shoes, Fish - any chance of purchasing a pair of those over in Blighty? Would eBay help me out, such as it does whenever I feel my shoe cupboard needs a well-deserved boost?
Big weddings. Yuk. I am with you there, most definitely. 24 are coming to ours, including me, Mr P and daughters #1 and #2. Had it been my sole choice, though, it would have been a dash to Gretna. No hassle, little expense and not having to please everyone. I disagree with you wholeheartedly on the diamonds, though - what's wrong with you, lass?!

Hey Agnes, the shoes are by Delman. You could probably search for them, but I got mine from www.bluefly.com who have a pair left in 'expresso', no more in plum. Bluefly will ship internationally too, so you might get lucky :-)

Oooh a nice small wedding, that sounds perfect Agnes. My friend is having 210. Not by choice, she wanted to go small, but the families were having none of it. It should be a fun wedding though, she is Irish and he is Italian. People are flying in to New York for it, so we'll be quite the international bunch :-)

I think if diamonds were less popular, I'd probably appreciate them more. I'll often shun the crowd's choice for something different and as I'm very pale with dark hair and green eyes, I think a sapphire or an emerald would suit my skin tone better.

All I have to say about this is:

1. Me. And actually, I don't really wear jewellery anyway. If I do (and I have worn some in the past) I am very picky about it.

2. Me. I have never wanted to be married--even though we can now do that legally in Canada. However, I suppose if I did end up with a partner, I might? If she wanted to.

Considering my relationship history and well...wow, sometimes the gay community can be disastrous in general regarding relationship shelf lives, making the relationship "legal" could turn out to be a nightmare.

If I did do it, well the size may not bother me but the cost sure would! Unless my gal was rich and could pay for it, fine. I sure couldn't!

But all things considered...no on the wedding thing.

3. Me! Me! Me! Even more than you! I've never wanted kids and that will never change!

I'm totally with you on these too. I think the big diamond fetish here is insane and have similarly had to feign amazement/interest over colleagues' rocks. Seems like a Manhattan version of a penis-extension car to me. Just because no one drives around here...

Hey LB, I think you may be onto something with your observation :-) Thanks for stopping by

LOL....the baby gene totally missed me permanently too, but oh boy do I ever have the shoe gene!

Nice to find another Brit' in the USA, although our lives could not be more different as I am in rural OK with cows and tornado's!

Hi Sarah, how fabulous to find a fellow Brit shoe fiend. Thanks for stopping by :-)
